Day 55: Out With The Old And In With The New

Day 55: Out With The Old And In With The New

Super Saturday! Out with the old and in with the new. Sometimes our home and environment just needs a face lift and sometimes it needs an overhaul. To ensure that this projects turns out to be a success every time and not an end of the day mess here’s a 3 part game plan you can follow for any room that will have you crossing the finish line.

Part 1 Declutter and clear out everything in the room. If you don’t use it lose it because less is more. It will either go in 1 of 3 categories: Keep, Cut or Makeover. Start with a blank room so you can envision it completely new.

Part 2 Decide on the function of the room and bring in the big pieces you want and play with space planning. Go with what feels right with the flow of walking into that space. For bedrooms and offices think about when you are standing in the doorway, have the furniture face you. Imagine how it would look if your were to take a picture standing there for a magazine. For living rooms and dining rooms and some bedrooms stand in front of the window with the view and space plan so that the furniture faces where you are standing to maximize the view from where you are sitting.

Part 3 Personalize your place. Bring in the accessories, lighting and wall art. Pick 1 color that you carry through out the room. Spray paint comes in handy to refresh smaller furniture pieces, picture frames and miss-matched vases. (look through your “Makeover” category of items) Find or make pillows and wall art with that same pop of color. Keep the tops of dressers, night stands and tables limited to 3 items: a statement piece (lamp, vase with flowers/plant, sculpture) and accent pieces (picture frames, candles, accessories)

Golden rule: Everything else that made the “keep category” goes in a drawer or storage of some sort out of sight! With this plan each room can be bright and new, it’s up to you.
